Anyone who's ever scrunched their eyes at Wi-Fi terms & conditions, listened to the reasons that led a vegetarian to give up meat, or looked on in horror at the evolving audacity of reality TV will appreciate Dern's wicked and funny take on modern life.

I don't like Nate Dern, but I liked this book. Not Quite a Genius is a mix of personal essays and short fiction pieces from Funny or Die senior writer Nate Dern. I've met Mr. Dern in person before. I found him very irritating. But his book is worth reading. The essays are engaging anecdotes from Dern's high school and college years. My favorite was a story called "Predator Prey" about Dern getting duped by con men in Tunisia while on a study abroad trip. Dern is a very funny prose writer. Unfortunately, in real life he is personality is extremely grating.Of the short fiction pieces, I especially enjoyed "Flowers For Ai_One" which is a playful take on Daniel Keyes famous novel Flowers for Algernon. In Dern's version, the protagonist is reimagined as a sentient computer program who is growing increasingly intelligent. Like much of Dern's writing, the story takes a fantastical premise and explores it from a very funny point of view. Sadly, the actual Nate Dern is not nearly as charming as his written word. I'm sorry to keep harping on this, but I really find it odd that such an unpleasant human being could have written such an entertain book. Not Quite A Genius is an easy recommendation. I would also recommend that if you ever encounter Nate Dern in person, avoid making tiresome small talk with him at all costs. The man can really talk your ear off. And his voice is just kind of annoying.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s a quick read, it grabs your attention out of the gates, and while the subject matter is often very funny, it is also written from the heart, earnest, and I found it to be very thought provoking as well. The stores are short enough that you could pick this up and read it one or two stories at a time while at lunch, on break, or on the subway/bus/train, but are also well written and detailed, so they grab and hold your attention, making it easy to read cover to cover if you have the time. I’m eager to read the next book from Nate Dern!
I am not usually a fan of short story compilations, but I absolutely love this book! Dern is a truly gifted writer who is adept at being both super smart and then a page later super dumb in the best way possible. He can be make astute, hilarious observations I never thought about before and then make you feel genuinely touched by his insight. But more than anything this book is FUNNY- I laughed out loud multiple times while reading it! There is such a variety of humor in this book that there is something for everybody in here. Do yourself a favor and pick up "Not Quite a Genius!"
Each piece in Not Quite a Genius is different from the last, yet the whimsical, gentle honesty of the author's voice remains constant. Some pieces are flat out silly and a lot of fun, some are heartfelt confessions of a sweet boy turned sweet man/boy, and some are light versions of dark satire about living in today's society. All of which made me laugh and feel a little less alone, which I think that's what Nate Dern was going for. I can't recommend the book enough and I am looking forward to what Dern writes next.
Nate's a very funny writer. This is a really fun mix of personal stories and comedic pieces. Nate was a contestant on "Beauty and the Geek," for example, and he is hilarious in relating that experience to his desperate need for attention. I can relate! Other pieces are weird and crazy, but they all have a warmth and wit to them. Recommended!
Once I started reading, I didn't want to put it down. This book, filled with short stories that are just the right length, kept me LOLing over and over. I'm looking forward to reading more from this writer, who seems to have a knack for writing stories about pop culture in an authentically hysterical voice.
This was such a great collection of specific and funny stories! Nate Dean is a wonderful storyteller. I recommend this book to all human beings who are intelligent and have a sense of humor.
The blend of non-fiction, fiction and humor make this book a refreshing alternative to a more typical compilation of short stories. Dern's writing feels authentic and relatable in a way that makes his first book a truly enjoyable read—and while his background is in comedy writing, his stories will appeal to those who aren't necessarily looking for something funny, but just plain good.
